What to expect in this tour
-
On the Essequibo River Tour, your day begins with a departure from Georgetown, crossing the Demerara Harbour Bridge to reach Roed-en-Rust, where you’ll board a boat to explore one of Guyana’s most historic and scenic rivers—the Essequibo.
-
Your first stop is Fort Island, home to colonial-era ruins and the well-preserved Court of Policy, a remnant of Dutch rule. As you continue along the river, you’ll pass some of its 365 islands, many of them untouched, until you reach Sloth Island, a tranquil riverside resort where you’ll enjoy a relaxing lunch surrounded by nature.
-
Next, you’ll visit Bartica, a lively riverside town known as the "Gateway to the Interior" due to its mining activity. Afterward, you’ll cruise to Baracara Falls, a beautiful spot where the gentle cascading water provides a natural "massage" and a chance to cool off in the refreshing river.
-
The final stop is Fort Kyk-over-al, a 400-year-old Dutch fort perched at the confluence of the Essequibo, Mazaruni, and Cuyuni Rivers. This ruin is the oldest of its kind in former Dutch Guiana and offers a glimpse into the region’s colonial history.
The tour wraps up with a return boat ride and ground transfer back to Georgetown by dusk, offering a rich blend of history, nature, and culture along one of South America’s great rivers.
