This immersive 8-day birding adventure takes you deep into the heart of Guyana’s most biodiverse regions, combining rich cultural experiences with exceptional wildlife and birdwatching opportunities. The tour begins with a dawn river excursion along the Mahaica River, where you'll observe flocks of egrets, ibis, marsh birds, and Guyana’s national bird—the unique and prehistoric Hoatzin. You'll also have a chance to spot the rare Blood-colored Woodpecker and Howler Monkeys before returning to Georgetown for lunch and a scenic sunset river cruise with views of the Demerara Harbour Bridge and vibrant flocks of Scarlet Ibis.
-
The journey continues into the Iwokrama Rainforest, one of the world’s last untouched tropical forests. Here, you’ll stay at the Iwokrama River Lodge, explore the trails and rivers by day and night, and search for caimans, night birds like potoos and owls, snakes, frogs, and other nocturnal wildlife. A challenging hike up Turtle Mountain rewards you with sweeping views over the canopy and opportunities to see eagles, monkeys, and forest-dwelling birds.
-
Further birding adventures take place in Mori Scrub and along forest trails en route to the famous Iwokrama Canopy Walkway. This treetop platform provides a rare vantage point for spotting canopy-dwelling birds such as parakeets, cotingas, puffbirds, and toucans, with possible sightings of the elusive White-winged Potoo at dusk.
-
At Atta Rainforest Lodge, explore trails rich with hummingbirds, curassows, and the rarely seen Rufous-winged Ground-cuckoo. Enjoy relaxed garden birdwatching, and take in the beauty of the surrounding rainforest. Next, journey to Corkwood for a guided walk to spot the brilliantly colored Guianan Cock-of-the-rock.
-
The tour concludes with a stay at Surama Eco-lodge, a community-run lodge in the savannah-forest transition zone. Here, enjoy a guided paddle along the Burro Burro River in search of Giant River Otters and diverse birdlife, including Scarlet Macaws and various antbirds. The trip ends with a village tour and an early morning birding walk before flying back to Georgetown.
